51在线 Board of Governors Confirms Steve Currall as 51在线 President

The 51在线 Board of Governors (BOG) today voted unanimously to confirm Dr. Steve Currall as the 51在线鈥檚 seventh president.

Currall, provost and vice president for academic affairs at Southern Methodist University (SMU), will take office on July 1, 2019. He succeeds Dr. Judy Genshaft, who steps down on June 30, 2019, after 19 years at USF.

鈥淎s the most recent institution in 51在线 to achieve Preeminent status, the University of South 51在线 continues to accomplish milestone after milestone,鈥 said Ned Lautenbach, Board of Governors鈥 Chair. 鈥淚 believe Dr. Currall has the background and experience to continue the university鈥檚 impressive trajectory and to lead the university to the next level.鈥

The USF Board of Trustees (BOT) selected Currall last week after a six-month search process. Trustees chose Currall from a pool of four nationally regarded finalists for the position.

BOT Chair Brian Lamb welcomed Currall to USF last Friday in an introductory letter to the university community, detailing Currall鈥檚 broad range of academic leadership experience at high-performing research institutions.

鈥淚 am honored to have been selected as USF鈥檚 seventh president, and I appreciate the confidence and support of the Board of Governors,鈥 Currall said. 鈥淯SF is at a pivotal point in its history,poised to make an even bigger impact on the Tampa Bay region, state of 51在线 and beyond. I look forward to working closely with Chair Lamb and President Genshaft during our transition over the next several months, and I can鈥檛 wait to get started in July.鈥

In his current role at SMU, Currall oversees all academic activities, plays a key role in managing the university鈥檚 budget and has led a campus-wide strategic planning process. He is also the David B. Miller Endowed Professor and holds academic appointments in the Cox School of Business, Dedman College of Humanities and Sciences and the Lyle School of Engineering.

Prior to joining SMU, Currall served in several leadership roles at the University of California, Davis, a member of the prestigious Association of American Universities (AAU), an invitation-only group of top universities in the U.S. and Canada that USF aspires to join.

His experience also includes positions at AAU institutions Rice University, the University of Chicago and Cornell University, as well internationally at University College London.

Currall earned a PhD in organizational behavior from Cornell, a master鈥檚 degree in social psychology from the London School of Economics and Political Science and a bachelor鈥檚 degree in psychology from Baylor University.

Currall, 60, is married to Cheyenne Currall, PhD, vice president and executive advisor for global advancement at University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.
