Mission, Objectives and Outcomes
Mission Statement of the Department
The mission of the IMSE Department is to:
- Ensure student success through a high-quality education which integrates the latest research and practices in the field;
- Pursue excellence in interdisciplinary research and innovation;
- Engage with the profession and the community.
Program Educational Objectives of the BSIE program (effective Fall 2021)
The Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering (BSIE) program has Program Educational Objectives (PEOs) that are consistent with the mission of the University of South 51在线 and our program鈥檚 constituencies. PEOs are broad statements that describe the career and professional accomplishments that the program is preparing graduates to achieve. These objectives describe the expected accomplishments of our graduates during the several years following graduation.
Our graduates are expected to:
PEO 1. Apply concepts of industrial engineering effectively, creatively, and ethically
to solve complex problems.
PEO 2. Demonstrate effective communication and teamwork with diverse and cross-disciplinary
stakeholders.
PEO 3. Engage in leadership while serving the profession and communities at the regional,
national, and global levels.
PEO 4. Continue to pursue life-long learning and professional growth.
Our PEOs are reviewed every 3 years according to a thorough review process with input from constituents (employers, advisory board members, alumni, departmental faculty, and BSIE program students). Our PEOs were most recently reviewed in 2021.
Student Outcomes of the BSIE program
The Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering (BSIE) program has Student Outcomes (SOs) that support our Program Educational Objectives. SOs describe what students are expected to know and be able to do by the time of graduation. These relate to the skills, knowledge, and behaviors that students acquire as they progress through our program. Attainment of these outcomes prepares graduates to enter the professional practice of engineering.
Graduates of the program will have an ability to:
SO 1. Identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles
of engineering, science, and mathematics
SO 2. Apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with
consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural,
social, environmental, and economic factors
SO 3. Communicate effectively with a range of audiences
SO 4. Recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations
and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions
in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts
SO 5. Function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create
a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives
SO 6. Develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data,
and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions
SO 7. Acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies.
