About the UMatter Program
Vision:
Helping students develop independence and confidence by providing meaningful learning experiences in a university setting.
Mission:
The mission of the Eileen Hoffman Hafer UMatter program is to provide an accessible and inclusive university experience that leads to competitive, integrated employment and independent living.
The Eileen Hoffman Hafer UMatter Program is a specialized postsecondary education program designed to offer young adults with intellectual disabilities the chance to participate in college courses, campus activities, and career preparation.
Through guidance from UMatter staff and peer mentors, students in the program gain experience in shifting from high school to college, building social connections, and developing essential skills for independent living and employment. Eligible students can receive scholarship funds to assist with tuition, housing, fees, and other expenses.
Program Goals
- Academic Advancement Program Goal: By the completion of this program the students will demonstrate academic advancement in key areas related to their employment goals. ​
- Self-Sufficiency Program Goal: Demonstrate the ability to solve problem independently and make decisions to maintain a self-sufficient lifestyle. ​
- Social Competency Program Goal: Understand effective and appropriate communication within social situation. ​
- Employment Readiness Program Goal: Have the skills needed to become employment ready.
Program Features
Students in the UMatter program have the opportunity to further their education, explore
career paths, and gain work experience while also developing practical life skills.
Program participants engage in a variety of campus experiences, such as:
- Attending and auditing college courses
- Participating in student clubs and organizations
- Completing internships
- Applying for jobs and gaining employment
- Becoming engaged members of their communities
Students may also have the opportunity to live on campus with support. This feature sets UMatter apart, as fewer than half of similar postsecondary programs in 51ÔÚÏß offer campus housing options.
