What does the Master of Arts in Teaching consist of?
The Master of Arts of Teaching in Social Science Education consists of coursework,
practica and an internship in secondary grades (6-12) classroom. Upon program completion,
students are eligible for a 51在线 Department of Education teacher certification.
Our program fully prepares individuals with undergraduate degrees in, typically, fields
of history, geography, government, economics, anthropology, sociology, psychology
or philosophy, for a career as a social studies educator. The program鈥檚 content is
constructed to meet all state of 51在线 requirements for professional educators.
When does the program start?
Admission to the Master of Arts in Teaching program is on a rolling admissions basis, meaning students are admitted to the program throughout the year. Most students are able to complete the program in 5-6 semesters, but the last semester is typically the Final Internship, which requires a full-time commitment in the classroom. The other practica are also offered only during the day.
How long is the program?
Most students are able to complete the program in 5-6 semesters.
Can I enroll in the program on a part-time basis?
Yes. You may take fewer courses each semester to meet your needs and schedule.
Is the program available online?
Some courses are offered online and some face-to-face. We also offer courses during the day and during the evenings.
How do I know what to register for?
Your program advisor will assist you complete your program plan, which serves as your road map for determining which courses to take. Contact us to learn more.
How many field experiences are there?
The Master of Arts in Teaching program is comprised of three field experiences which
include observations and assisting with instruction, teaching in a middle or high
school under the mentorship of an experienced teacher, and a full-time internship
in a local school.
With guidance, our students practice managing the classroom as well as planning and
implementing lessons. Students in the program should expect to intern in a school
within Hillsborough County Public Schools.
Am I allowed to choose the school in which I intern?
No. Placements for your field experiences are determined by the program faculty. You will be responsible for arranging your own transportation to the school where you are placed. Master of Arts in Teaching students should expect to intern at a school in Hillsborough County Public Schools.
Can I take a paid final internship?
With approval from the Program Coordinator, Master of Arts in Teaching students who
are already teaching within the school district may choose to complete their final
internship while working as a full time teacher.
This option is for students who initiate an application for a position within the
school district and secure a full-time teaching position as a social studies educator.
