The 51在线鈥檚 printmaking program emphasizes the unique quality of the graphic aesthetic and its special place in the visual arts. The significance of printmaking鈥檚 rich, formal pedigree continues to inspire through the elegance of process. The communal spirit is an important component of the USF print shop, facilitating professional course delivery, technical training and real-world opportunities.
Undergraduate Program
Courses offered in printmaking include all of the traditional processes as well as specialized technical courses. Students are expected to explore the role of the printmaker in society and the significance of prints as a vital form of communication. Undergraduate students progress through a concentration in printmaking by learning basic techniques and materials, later advancing to more inventive and conceptual uses of print media. A primary focus in the USF Printmaking program is the interface of digital imaging and advanced graphics processes including digital pre-press design and cutting-edge production techniques including laser engraving and photo-mechanical printing. There are also applied arts screen printing courses that teach garment and poster printing.
Exchange portfolios, print exhibitions and visiting artists expose students to the many aspects of printmaking as a disciplinary and interdisciplinary activity. The printmaking program, as well as the entire School of Art & Art History, greatly benefits from the presence of , the world-acclaimed print and sculpture atelier located on the USF campus. Students are exposed to the activities of a professional printmaking studio, where notable national and international artists collaborate with master printers in the production of print editions. Select advanced printmaking students are awarded internships at Graphicstudio to enhance their knowledge of printmaking professional practices.
Graduate Program
Our nationally ranked Master of Fine Arts degree is an idea-centered program encouraging broad media exploration, in-depth projects and engagement with theoretical and cultural issues.
The MFA program encourages our graduate students to take advantage of excellent private studio space, technical facilities and the opportunity to teach. Graduate students receive focused, individual attention in their studio work from professionally active research and teaching faculty. In their first year, graduate students work closely with faculty as graduate assistants, often helping in their courses and gain experience to teach independently. In their studio work and pedagogy, MFA students are integral to the area鈥檚 mission for delivering contemporaneous content.
