Meet Anya Wong, a Senior majoring in Health Sciences with a concentration in Health Information Technology and minoring in Public Health. Anya is President of the Student Health Informatics Club (SHIC), which promotes health informatics and health IT opportunities to all majors on campus. If you want to gain an understanding of how health and information work together to make our quality of life better, this is the club for you! SHIC activities include professional development workshops, guest speaker events, and most recently, reaching out to students interested in being involved with the iSchool Health Informatics Research Lab (iSHIRL).
As President of SHIC, and through her collaborations with iSHIRL, Anya has participated in the research project, "Characteristics of U.S. Healthcare Administration, Health Informatics, and Health Information Management Baccalaureate Programs." She worked alongside Dr. Christina Eldredge, Dr. Katie McCarthy, and fellow student Fatima Mercado to highlight the growing number of Health Informatics, Healthcare Administration, and Health Information Management programs available as Baccalaureate programs in the United States. The project studied geographic variations in program degrees and curriculum requirements. The researchers recommended that standardization is needed for these growing scholastic pursuits, to give prospective students the best chance of choosing the right degree for their career path. Through her participation in this research, Anya was able to present this research at the Spring 2024 OneUSF Undergraduate Research Conference. Anya has also recently finished her semester-long internship with Moffitt, and she continues to strive to support students exploring health informatics/health IT and hopes to pursue a career within these fields post-graduation.
