ABOUT MY RESEARCH

I am pursuing a master鈥檚 degree in marine science, studying trace metal biogeochemistry with a focus on nickel under the direction of Dr. Kristen Buck. Trace metals can be important limiting nutrients in the ocean, depending on their availability and concentrations. Therefore, they are critical to understanding where and to what extent biological processes such as photosynthesis in phytoplankton can function. For my thesis research, I will measure the speciation and distribution of nickel in the eastern Gulf of Mexico, which can clue us into linked cycles of other elements such as nitrogen and carbon.

WHY USF CMS?

USF boasts a top-notch marine science program with some of the leading scientists in their respective fields, who teach and brush noses with students regularly. The CMS also has close ties with multiple public and private sector organizations such as 51在线 Fish and Wildlife, NOAA, and USGS, among others. These close ties allow students ample opportunity to research with colleagues in all branches of science.

Additionally, students are often involved in collaborative efforts by going out to sea; an invaluable and rare experience for many. Not only does USF uphold its status as an R1 university, but it also has a community of equal caliber. Everyone at USF is arguably as warm as the golden 51在线 sunshine.
