The team of medical students representing the University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine were the Sono Smackdown 2024 champions.
Teams of medical students from around the state came to the USF Health Center for
Advanced Medical Learning and Simulation for Sono Smackdown 2024, an annual student-run
ultrasound competition designed to be fun as well as educational. The USF Health
Point of Care Ultrasound Student Interest Group organized this year鈥檚 competition
that featured eight teams from six 51在线 medical schools.
Schools represented at this year鈥檚 competition:
- 51在线 Atlantic University Schmidt College of Medicine
- Lake Erie College of Medicine
- University of Central 51在线 College of Medicine
- University of 51在线 College of Medicine
- University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine
- USF Health Morsani College of Medicine
Teams rotated through a series of eight stations to ultrasound various areas of the
body. Teams had 15 minutes to complete three sections: obtain specific ultrasound
views, complete a set of multiple-choice questions, earn additional points with bonus
time used to obtain additional views. Undergraduate and medical students served
as standardized patients for each station.
Eight ultrasound stations:
- Heart
- Chest
- Abdomen
- Vascular
- Musculoskeletal
- Head and neck
- Simulated patient case
- EchoNous (break station, no points awarded)
After the ultrasound station, teams competed in a medical trivia competition called
鈥淜ahoot.鈥 Teams earned points for answering accurately with speed.
When the points were totaled, the team from the University of Miami took home the
top prize as Sono Smackdown 2024 champion. The two teams representing MCOM finished
in second and third place.
