This 2024 is a big year for the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine (MCOM) 鈥 it marks the 50th anniversary of when the charter class graduated.
To celebrate this milestone, MCOM is planning a year鈥檚 worth of events and highlighting key moments of the medical school鈥檚 history.
Among the plans are a clay shooting competition, taking place Jan. 25, and a golf tournament, scheduled for April 23. And wrapping up the year will be a gala in October 2024. These events are being sponsored by MCOM鈥檚 long-standing clinical partner and primary teaching affiliate Tampa General Hospital.
The MCOM 50th Anniversary celebration is being coordinated through the USF Health Office of Development, led by Arty Giallourakis, chief development officer and associate vice president for USF Health Development and Alumni Relations.
Central to each event is fundraising for medical school scholarships, an effort already seeing success 鈥 the clay shoot competition in January is nearly sold out and donations to this event鈥檚 focused scholarship have almost fully funded the goal.
鈥淭his year we want to celebrate the founding of our medical school by looking forward,鈥 said Charles J. Lockwood, MD, MHCM, executive vice president of USF Health and dean of the Morsani College of Medicine. 鈥淲e want to ensure that the best and brightest students continue to come the Morsani College of Medicine to become the next generation of health care leaders by increasing our scholarship endowments. We are deeply grateful to those who have already contributed and are looking forward to working with our USF Health family to meet our fundraising goals.鈥
Complementing event fundraising is a 鈥50 for 50鈥 Campaign that targets another important goal. from Val Riddle, MD, associate dean for MCOM alumni engagement.
In addition to events, the 50th Anniversary celebration will also offer coverage of key milestones in the college鈥檚 history, interviews with alumni from across the years, and the publication of a book highlighting the first 50 years of the school.
