Bio

Being of both Iranian and Arab decent, I bring my background knowledge and unique international perspective to my classroom. My academic areas of interest include comparative politics, Middle Eastern studies, social movements, international law, and human rights norms in regards to women鈥檚 rights and status in society. Specifically, my dissertation research is focused on the experiences of practicing Shia women in the United States and their socialization of competing standards in regards to liberal and Islamic gender norms, related feminisms, and the perspectives of gender equality vs. gender complementarity. On a wider scale, I am interested in documenting the lived experiences of Middle Eastern and Latin American women and their struggles and engagement with human rights discourses and the United Nations Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW). The more research I do, the more similarities I find amongst people, rather than differences, and focusing on this can help us together find sustainable solutions to global issues.
