Angsumala Tamang’s work is based on ethnomusicology, cultural studies, postcolonial theory, minority rights, and representation of minority borderland identity in sub-Himalayan northeast India. Situated within the framework of critical ethnography, her work involves quantitative interpretation of historic data/texts, interviews, participant observation, and examining the role of culture and music to sustain as well as resist socio-economic inequality and marginalization within particular settings. In addition, self-reflexivity is an integral method that informs and shapes her academic interests and teaching methodology. Her courses focus on geographical perspectives/culture area studies with an emphasis on South Asia.
Dr. Tamang received her M.A.– Ph.D. in Ethnomusicology from University of California,
Los Angeles (UCLA). Being born and raised in India, she also completed her M.Music
from Banaras Hindu University in North Indian Classical Music. She taught at Sikkim
University, India, and University of Tennessee, Knoxville, before joining University
of South 51ÔÚÏß in 2017. She teaches at the Department of Humanities and Culture
Studies, and is also affiliated with Judy Genshaft Honors College, USF.
